Janel Morey-Sassano

Janel is an EMDR certified, IFS informed therapist who specializes in maternal mental health and post-traumatic stress disorder. Janel teaches women and parents to take care of themselves first so they can feel better while caring for others. Janel worked and trained at the Postpartum Stress Center where she learned to treat women who struggle with perinatal mood and anxiety disorders, infertility, birth trauma, infant loss/miscarriage and adoption struggles. With a passion for groups and workshops she uses group work to shift the lens on the mommy myths, cultural expectations and perfectionistic standards which can cause overwhelm and shame. Also, has enjoyed hosting EMDR GTEP workshops for survivors of birth trauma. Janel uses a de-pathologizing, holistic approach; Instead of asking "what's your diagnosis?", She asks, "what happened to you?" She believes that all behavior is adaptive and "symptoms" arise from a combination of genetic, environment, social and cultural factors. Once we examine and dismantle a sense of shame and reconnect to the body, healing can begin! Clinical supervision is also a passion of hers and she enjoys training and mentoring budding perinatal therapists. Janel is in private practice, servicing clients in Illinois and New Jersey via telehealth.
